Alginate impression
Alginate remains a widely used impression material in dentistry due to its unique physico-chemical properties. As an irreversible hydrocolloid, it undergoes a sol-gel transformation through a chemical reaction that cannot be reversed. Its ease of manipulation, rapid setting time, and hydrophilicity make it especially suitable for use in moist oral environments.
However, its dimensional stability is limited over time due to phenomena such as syneresis and imbibition, which require immediate pouring after impression. Understanding these characteristics allows clinicians to optimize their clinical protocols, avoid common errors, and ensure the accuracy and reliability of preliminary impressions.
Mastering the material’s behavior not only improves the technical outcome but also contributes to the efficiency and success of prosthetic treatment planning.
The alginate impression is an anatomical impression that records the mucosa in the static state.
It is very important to keep the impression well, to treat it properly before moving to the casting, which must also be mastered to obtain a mold faithful to the dental arch.
